After another year of superb entries, meet the voluntary arts groups who have proved themselves to be truly epic . . .
Four groups won our National Awards, each with a very worthy Runner-up. Alongside this, we ran our inaugural Peer Award for Excellence and People’s Choice Award. Click on the links below to read all about them.
National winners
England - Quilts 4 London – encouraged over 15,000 people to make pennants for participants in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.Ireland - Fermanagh Saint Patrick’s Day Festival – reinvented the St Patrick’s Day parade as a cross-community, non-sectarian carnival, attracting over 14,000 people.
Scotland - Barra Bunting Project – asked anyone who had ever set foot on the Isle of Barra to create a piece of bunting, resulting in contributions from around the globe.Wales - Welsh Basketmakers South Wales Group – created a large-scale exhibition for the Basketmakers Association AGM, which now has permanent residence at the National Botanical Gardens of Wales.

National runners-up
England - The City of Birmingham Choir – brought together communities in the West Midlands to perform a new work celebrating musical diversity.Ireland - The Vent Collective – created a 3km chalk mural during Belfast’s Culture Night celebrations, engaging over 100 participants and entertaining many more.Scotland - The Craws Nest Project – Helped artists of all ages turn a seaside eyesore into a beautiful public mosaic, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.Wales - Fishguard Arts Society – ran innovative drawing and collage workshops around Fishguard, leading to the creation of a new drawing group.
The Peer Award for Excellence - This new award allowed all of the groups on the Epic Awards shortlist to recognise the good work of their peers. Each shortlisted group could cast just one vote (and not for themselves!) and the winner was theFermanagh Saint Patrick’s Day Festival – which also picked up the National Epic Award for Ireland.
People’s Choice Award
Derwent Brass – commissioned a brand new piece of contemporary brass music, to celebrate the group’s 20th anniversary.
Forth Bridges Accordion Band – a cross-generational band that plugged a hole in the Scottish music scene, kept traditions alive and brought people together.
